For this installment of the WashU Mindfulness Journal Club, we are delighted to have Dr. Geoff Childs joining us!
Dr. Childs is a Professor of Sociocultural Anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis. Professor Childs' research occupies the interdisciplinary space between anthropology and demography. He regularly visits the Tibetan enclaves in northern Gorkha District, Nepal, to study local history, family management strategies, demographic trends, and a host of other topics.
Dr. Childs will be discussing the Mindfulness of Death, an important concept in Tibetan Buddhism. The following short writings by Tibetan lamas will be the basis for our discussion:
Lopez 1997: Tsongkhapa's influential writing on Mindfulness of Death, introduced and translated by Donald Lopez.
Mullen 1998: Conversation with an Old Man, introduced and translated by Glenn Mullen. An interesting writing by Lama Konchok Dronme in which he lays out the principles of Mindfulness of Death through a conversation between an older and younger man.
